Disappointment Arises as New Korean Drama “Gyeongseong Creature” Could Not Fulfill Viewers’ Expectations
Since its first announcement, Netflix’s new Korean drama “Gyeongseong Creature” has become one of the most highly-anticipated series this year. Not only does it feature an exciting blend of historical, mystery, and fantasy, but the new Korean drama also casts two of the most prominent Korean actors, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee.
The anticipation further escalated when Netflix made an early announcement that “Gyeongseong Creature” would also feature Season 2. Although some fans frowned at Korean dramas with multiple seasons, the presence of Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee, along with the series’ promising storyline created more expectations from global audiences.
Unfortunately, as the show aired on December 22, everything was unexpected. Instead, some viewers expressed their disappointment against the new Korean drama. And it became an even bigger issue with Han So Hee’s recent updates on her social media.
So, what really happened to Han So Hee and her new Korean drama, “Gyeongseong Creature”?
Lack of Couple Chemistry Between Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee
The first controversy against “Gyeongseong Creature” is the alleged lack of chemistry between the main couple, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee.
Last week, Netflix Korea released promotional photos of Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee as the main couple of “Gyeongseong Creature.”
Indeed, the two actors were overwhelming viewers with their stunning visual chemistry. However, many still noticed that Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee lacked that special connections we often see in Korean drama couples such as Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung in “My Demon” and Bae Suzy and Yang Se Jong in “Doona!”.
Even during special interviews that Netflix usually presented to promote their series, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee showed no special bond actors usually formed during filming. Netizens commented that they simply look like two strangers interacting in public places.
- “It looks like they might not share any chemistry.”
- “Why does it feel like I’m looking at two strangers in a photo?”
- “This has to be the most awkward couple photo I’ve seen in years, LOL. Individually, they look great, though.”
- “Is this meant to be a romance drama? They hardly seem like a couple.”
- “Park Seo Joon usually has great chemistry with his co-stars, but looking at these photos, it seems like he and Han So Hee have opposite concepts, making it hard to see any chemistry between them. Based on these shots, Han So Hee’s expressions also seem quite awkward.”
“Gyeongseong Creature” New Korean Drama Plot Controversy: Boring, Disoriented, and Sleep-Inducing
Despite its massive anticipation before its release, “Gyeongseong Creature” only received a lukewarm reception after it aired. The new Korean drama has not created the anticipated buzz in social media or the press and is overshadowed by other series, notably “My Demon.”
Good Acting, Bad Story
Based on reviews from websites and Korean media, the Netflix series failed to deliver the hype they promised in the preview. The storyline was boring, and viewers were not even curious about how the story unfolded. Worse, some even said that even the cast’s acting was amazing, the writing was too boring, and it brought them to sleep.
In addition to the boring plot, Korean media criticized the new Korean drama for having a disorganized and unoriginal storyline. The media complained that “Gyeongseong Creature” carried the 1945 theme like the previous Korean dramas with the same setting. They even stated that watching “Gyeongseong Creature” only brought a sense of déjà vu, returning them to these other series.
What’s more, users in online communities even stated that there was no use in bringing the 1945 theme into the setting. It was simply a meaningless addition that gobbled up the production budget.
- “It’s alright, yet it fell short of what I expected. Honestly, Han So Hee did a decent job, but I wouldn’t count this as one of Park Seo Joon’s most remarkable performances.”
- “When ‘Forever’ started playing, I was really thrown off. It seemed totally mismatched with the historical setting and kind of dampened my mood.”
- “I wasn’t expecting much, but I’m still let down. The acting is fine, though I believe Han So-hee and Park Seo Joon are capable of more. The major letdown is the script. It would have been fine for a TV series in the early 2010s, but today’s scriptwriting demands something fresher. It all just seemed too similar to other period Kdramas, and that’s tedious.”
- “I tried watching the first episode but ended up falling asleep. Wasn’t this supposed to be a thrilling series?
Han So Hee and Her Social Media Controversy: What Happened?
In like manners, the series’ actress, Han So Hee, encountered controversy due to her social media post.
Previously, the series has faced severe criticism from Japanese netizens, particularly directed at Han So Hee. The drama’s portrayal of the Japanese Army’s historical atrocities has led to a backlash, with Japanese critics targeting the story and actors instead of acknowledging their ancestors’ past actions.
As a result, these Japanese haters flooded Han So Hee’s social media accounts with malicious comments.
Despite the hate, Han So Hee posted stills from the show. Along with the photo, she also posted a picture of Korean independence activist Ahn Jung Geun. She then emphasized that the story focuses on people fighting against human experimentation monsters. It did not focus on romance or creatures during the Japanese colonial era.
“This tale is about the brave individuals from a magnificent but challenging era who battled a monstrous creation from human experiments. It’s not about the romantic tales of Gyeongseong or mythical beings from the Japanese colonial period. It’s set in a spring where love was the only solace people could find amidst the turmoil.”

Due to this post, some Japanese critics accused Han So-hee of being anti-Japan and inconsiderate of Japanese sentiments. Han So-hee respectfully replied to a Japanese viewer’s comment about needing courage to watch the drama, acknowledging the difficulty but appreciating their courage.
“It’s unfortunate, but it’s the reality. Nonetheless, I appreciate your bravery.”
Han So Hee.
Meanwhile, the actress also earned praise and support from Korean netizens for her stance and bravery. Despite Japan being a significant market for her career, Han So-hee stood firm in her beliefs as a Korean citizen.
