Can I renew my tag at any tag office in Georgia? ›

Vehicle Registrations can be renewed at your County Tag Office. The following information is required: Renewal notice. When applying in-person, you must show your valid Georgia driver's license or ID card.

Tag Services

Initial Tag Issuance – You may make an appointment if you have purchased a vehicle from a dealership and they have notified you that you may now get your tag. However, NO APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY. You may order the tag for your new purchase at drives.ga.gov.

When to Register. New Residents: Register 30 days from the date you move to Georgia. Register your motor vehicle, tractor, motorcycle, or trailer, and get a Georgia license plate at your County Tag Office. Georgia Residents (Casual Sales): Register within 7 business days from the date of purchase.

Unfortunately, there is no statutorily given grace period for driving with expired tags in GA. In some instances, a police officer may give you a warning especially if the expiration date is close in time; however they are not required and can ticket you in accordance with GA law. § 40-2-8.
